International Waste and Disposal Management Study By William C. Harrison My Camping Mall reviews an International Waste Management Project. This work was performed by William C. Harrison as head of an environmental consulting firm. The project consisted of evaluating solid and International waste disposal alternatives for the purpose of developing a comprehensive solid waste management plan that would be environmentally sound and cost-effective for the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste on International ships and airplanes. A port project, we served as a consultant and participated on the project by inventorying current waste types and quantities, evaluating existing solid waste systems, developing minimization guidelines and goals, conducting cost analysis of various alternatives, and recommending implementation. One method of collecting data was to interview ship personnel who were aboard ships docked at the Maritime Facilities about their waste practices. This project required that we review procedures dealing with disposal practices found in the disposal of toxic, hazardous or other waste by-products on International ships and planes. The handling and disposal of solid waste and International garbage is regulated by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and MARPOL V., U. S. Coast Guard (USCG). Mr. Harrison and his crew went aboard ships docked at the Maritime Facilities to interview ship personnel about their waste practices. What we found were that the disposal practices were inconsistently enforced even for those who were fully knowledgeable of the regulatory guidelines. While some admitted knowledge of the requirements, some others were not aware of the guidelines. As a consequence, ship crew members often stored garbage and other waste and illegally disposed of the waste at sea. AUTHOR: William C.
